Mastitis/Clogged Ducts

While breastfeeding, an obstruction of milk flow can occur in the ductal system of the breast. This can lead to inflammation and/or infection of the breast, also known as mastitis. Most often this occurs early on, in the first 6-8 weeks postpartum, however, it can happen at any time while breastfeeding.

What to Expect

  • Therapeutic breast massage
  • Hand expression of milk
  • Physical therapy education regarding these conditions and techniques to utilize at home
  • Modalities such as Ultrasound, heat, or ice may also be recommended

**If you are experiencing any signs or symptoms of infection, such as swelling, redness, or heat, it is recommended that you contact your doctor first to rule out infection and receive an appropriate antibiotic if needed.

Who Would Benefit

Breastfeeding or lactating mothers experiencing breast pain secondary to clogged ducts or mastitis.

Therapists

I had therapy (elsewhere) and I never really thought it helped. At Hulst Jepsen, I had a much better experience. The people that work there are warm and caring. They kept track of my progress and pushed me to get better. I can do so much more without pain! Thank you all!
