Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy combines the benefits of buoyancy and resistance to assist movement, progress strength, gait, and balance.

What to Expect

An initial evaluation by one of our physical therapists may be on land or scheduled right at the pool to establish your baseline. This can be performed at any one of our locations, most convenient for you.

Following your evaluation, you will be scheduled at one of our 4 pool locations: Our Wyoming clinic, Jenison ISR Swim Safe, Evergreen Commons – Holland, and Caledonia Community Center YMCA.

The therapist will be in the pool to instruct and assist you with an individualized exercise program. You are not expected to swim—sitting, standing, and walking exercises are done without getting your hair too wet!

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Is the water warm?
    • Yes! The water in our Wyoming Clinic pool is 90-92 degrees, Evergreen Commons pool is 86-88 degrees, Jenison ISR Swim Safe is 88-90 degrees, and the Caledonia Community Center pool is 84 degrees.
  • Is the pool easily accessible (lift, stairs, etc.)?
    • Yes! All of our pools have stairs (6 steps) with a handrail and pool lifts are available at every location except Jenison.
  • Do I need to know how to swim?
    • No. Swimming is not required. Exercises are performed standing in waist- or chest-deep water (about 4 feet), and therapists often use flotation belts or devices to help you. You can hold onto the pool wall or railings as needed, and your hair usually remains dry.
  • What should I wear?
    • A modest swimsuit or clothing that you are comfortable wearing in water (i.e., t-shirts, shorts). Water shoes may also be worn, but are optional.

I’ve been to other places but no one is as good at what they do as Hulst Jepsen. The variety of specialists in their facilities is astounding. The service is excellent.
