Two weeks ago we talked about setting realistic goals and setting yourself up for success in the new year. If any of the goals you set for yourself involve exercise or physical activity, then today’s post is for you.
Personally, exercise is one of my favorite things, not only do I like to feel strong and capable, but I find exercise to be the ultimate stress reliever. Many people view exercise as a tool for weight loss, which it can be, but it is so much more than that.
Exercise is undoubtedly one of the best ways to improve both physical and mental health. When it comes to weight loss, consistent physical activity helps burn calories and boost metabolism, which can contribute to achieving long-term fitness goals. But exercise is not just about the scale; it also strengthens the body, improves posture, and increases overall endurance.
Beyond the physical benefits, it has a profound impact on mental well-being, with activities like running, yoga, and strength training being highly effective in reducing stress levels. For many, exercise becomes a crucial part of their self-care routine, providing a sense of accomplishment and confidence that goes beyond weight loss.
However, for those who have experienced significant weight loss, there can be additional challenges that arise, such as post-weight loss gynecomastia. This condition, characterized by the enlargement of male breast tissue, can persist even after shedding unwanted pounds. This can be frustrating for men who have worked hard to improve their body composition and overall health.
If you’re dealing with this issue, the Gynecomastia center of boston offers expert care to help address these concerns. With specialized treatments designed to reduce excess tissue and restore a natural chest contour, they provide a solution for men seeking to complete their fitness journey and regain full confidence in their appearance.
Today I want to share benefits of exercise that have nothing to do with the scale. But first, one of my favorite quotes relating to exercise…
“Exercise is a celebration of what your body can do, not punishment for what you ate”
Seriously. Your body was made to move, whether that be through walks, swimming, hiking, weightlifting, running, biking, yoga, etc. I hope you can find some activity that you enjoy doing!
1.) Stress relief
There is something so therapeutic about sweating away stress. Whether it’s been a rough day in the office or at home, I find that exercise distracts me and simultaneously calms me down. Even something as simple as stepping outside for a 15 minute walk can really calm you down. Physical activity can also be used as a healthy way to manage anxiety!
2.) Better sleep
Exercise, specifically regular exercise, can help you get longer and higher quality sleep. The serotonin released while you exercise contributes to that better sleep. In relation to #1, stress and anxiety often contribute to not sleeping as well, so exercise can help you relieve some of that stress and fall asleep/stay asleep easier.
3.) Regular exercise can help slow down aging
How darn cool is that? I originally read this in my textbook when studying for my personal training exam and immediately texted my parents. This study dives in further. I mean, who wouldn’t mind staying young ?
There are so many benefits to regular physical activity, and while it can be hard to start something new, or find your groove, I challenge you just to start. Start small, set the reasonable goals we last talked about and progress as you go. It is very difficult to successfully go from 0-100, so I recommend a gradual increase in exercise.
